Mandatory Credit: Photo by Rex Features The 70th Anniversary of the first flight of a Spitfire is marked by a celebration flight over Southampton, the home of the aircraft. Five of the revolutionary war planes, which helped the Allied forces to victory in the Second World War, took off simultaneously 70 years to the minute after the first Spitfire flight. The Spitfire's maiden flight took place four years earlier at Eastleigh Airfield, which is now Southampton International Airport.
